Coronation Street fans are predicting a tragic twist in the plot that could see Gail Platt killed off by a fellow resident. The exit of soap legend Helen Worth, who has played Gail for 50 years, was confirmed back in June.

Initially, her departure was set to involve ex-husband Martin Platt, portrayed by Sean Wilson. However, after filming several weeks’ worth of scenes, it emerged that Sean had left the show.

As a result, the soap brought back former star John Thomson, who plays Jesse, to be part of Gail’s exit storyline. Last week saw Jesse return, revealing he and Gail had a holiday fling in Thailand.

Since then, he’s clashed with Gail’s children Sarah (Tina O’Brien) and David (Jack P. Shephard).

Tensions have risen since Gail decided to sell her and David’s house to fund granddaughter Bethany’s (Lucy Fallon) medical bills, according to Liverpool Echo. But Wednesday’s episode (October 23) took a dramatic turn when Gail seemed to suffer a heart attack, leading Jesse to call an ambulance, reports Plymouth Live.

She was rushed to hospital where she went into cardiac arrest. Doctors later told the Platts that Gail had a blocked artery and needed surgery to insert a stent.

Now, fans are speculating that Gail will be killed off following the announcement of her departure.

Coronation Street fans are reeling from the possibility of a major character being bumped off. Gossip is flying around a Corrie Facebook group, with one troubled fan posting: “Poor Gail, I really hope she’s going to be ok.”

Speculation spirals as another member conjectures: “What if all along David is going to murder Gail and there is no happy ending exit for her.”

The theory prompted varied reactions among fans, with one querying, “Would he really murder his mum? ” leading to a response: “He has a dark side. And it’s about time he has a decent storyline.”

Another staunchly remarked: “If Gail gets killed off I will riot, but I can see this happening.”

Helen Worth, who portrays Gail, shares her sentiments on her departure, saying: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.”

“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.”
