As the world continues to grapple with the aftermath of COVID-19 — the virus that killed millions of lives, China is in the grip of another deadly virus attack – the HMPV or Human Metapneumovirus. Known for causing severe breathing issues, and a sudden drop in blood oxygen levels, this virus has sent fresh threats across the globe of another potential pandemic-like outbreak.
Several videos have emerged on social media, showing how rapidly this virus is spreading in Beijing, China- leading to increased hospitalization. With all the experience that the world has gained from COVID-19 which had a very similar outbreak, let’s decode the virus and understand how to stay safe from it from ground zero.
Human Metapneumovirus, also known as HMPV, is a respiratory virus that was first identified back in 2001. The HMPV virus belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, which also includes viruses like measles and mumps. As per experts, the HMPV virus after entering the human body — primarily affects the respiratory system. This is why infected individuals can develop mild to severe infections. It is considered one of the leading causes of respiratory illnesses, particularly in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Understanding the transmission process of the virus is important since the only key to preventing the virus from spreading is to follow safety rules. As per experts, the HMPV virus spreads via respiratory droplets (when an infected patient coughs or sneezes, the droplets can travel via air and reach the mouth, nose, or eyes of another individual – infecting him/her as well). The HMPV virus can also spread via direct contact with contaminated surfaces or through close personal interactions. The virus is highly contagious and often peaks during late winter and early spring, similar to the seasonal patterns of influenza.
Experts have stated that it is too early to say that this virus can have similar effects to COVID-19. In a recent statement, the CDC has stated — “While HMPV has been present for decades, recent outbreaks in China have raised alarm due to the virus’s increased transmission rate and its potential to overwhelm healthcare systems. Its similarity to COVID-19 in terms of symptoms and spread has added to the urgency of understanding and managing the outbreak.”
The symptoms of HMPV can range from mild to severe, depending on the individual’s age, health status, and immune response. As per experts, the virus is primarily known for affecting the respiratory tract after entering the body, and then it can mimic symptoms of other respiratory illnesses like the common cold, flu, or COVID-19.
Some of the Common Symptoms Include –
In Severe Cases, Symptoms Include –
Symptoms in Children: As per experts, the virus is currently a bigger threat to Children, and the elderly compared to others. Some of the common signs that a child may develop after contracting the HMPV virus are — difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, irritability, and feeding difficulties.
Comparison to COVID-19 Symptoms: HMPV shares several symptoms with COVID-19, such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath, making it challenging to differentiate without diagnostic testing. However, unlike COVID-19, HMPV is not associated with loss of taste or smell.
As cases of HMPV Virus surge in China, here are the top preventive measures that one must follow right now to stay safe from the virus attack:
While no vaccine currently exists for HMPV, staying updated on flu and COVID-19 vaccinations can help reduce the overall burden of respiratory illnesses.
