Electrical safety tips for the holiday season

MANILA, Philippines – It’s Christmas season. Whether you’re leaving to shop for a day or spend the holidays in the province or abroad, you need to ensure that your homes are safe from any electrical failures while away.

Meralco said that its crew is on standby 24/7 this holiday to help ensure an accident-free celebration for Filipinos. But we hope that you won’t need the electric company to respond to any emergency by taking precautions yourselves to prevent any accident.

Here are some tips from Meralco:

  • Unplug Christmas lights and other appliances when not in use.
  • Inspect Christmas lights before reusing them.
  • Avoid using nails and thumb tacks when installing Christmas lights.
  • Avoid “octopus” connections.
  • Make fire extinguishers at home readily available.

The electric company also advised the public to report any electrical-related concerns to their social media accounts: Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X formerly Twitter (@meralco). You can also reach out to them at 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211; Meralco Hotline at 16211 and 8631-1111.

“We are reminding our customers to do their part in ensuring a bright and merry holiday season by practicing electrical safety. Rest assured, contingency measures are in place and our crews are on standby ready to respond to any concern on our electricity service,” Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications Joe Zaldarriaga said. – Rappler.com
