Letters to the Editor – Three cheers for art students, a nonprofit, two giant pandas

1 Lovejoy High School art students — The vast academic halls of Lovejoy High School in Lucas became an art gallery on Dec. 7. The gallery was sponsored by the art teachers at Lovejoy and gave the students a chance to sell some of their work.

I am fortunate to guest teach there and several times, I taught the art classes. One young art class student was sculpting a life-sized bust of her father. The day I was in her class, she was working on his right eye to get it just right.

Another student is a photographer and takes stunning pictures of his international travels — photos that speak to you and tell a story through the eyes of a young artist.

The Lovejoy art gallery is much better than the Paris Louvre because you get an up-close look at the oil paintings — no postage stamp-sized Mona Lisas hung on the wall 50 feet away. And you get to meet the young artists.

Get smart opinions on the topics North Texans care about.

Vincent van Gogh and Michelangelo, look out! There is some real talent here springing up from the Blackland Prairies of Lucas, Texas.

2 FISH/Hunt County Shared Ministries — When I think about the holiday season, I realize I get toys and clothes that some other people don’t. But there’s an organization that helps solve this problem in Hunt County. It’s called FISH or Hunt County Shared Ministries.

The nonprofit needs donations to help families who are in need. This just hurts my heart that there is so much need. If you are willing to help, check the website, hcsmfish.org.

I’m thankful for all they do, especially at this time of year. No one should do without during the holidays.

3 Giant pandas — About two months ago, the giant pandas arrived at the National Zoo in Washington. I believe that this is the most reliable gauge that relations between the United States and China are stable. Three cheers for and welcome to Qing Bao and Bao Li!
