Gukesh had entered the 2024 World Championship as the strong favourite after his
historic victory at the Candidates Tournament in Toronto, as well as his dominant performance in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where he played a crucial role in the Indian ‘Open’ team’s triumph. Ding, however, managed to catch Gukesh by surprise in Round 1 on Monday despite having not won a game in the Classical format since January.

The 32-year-old GM had become the
first Chinese player to be crowned chess world champion after defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in last year’s World Championship in Astana, and has highlighted the fact that he certainly can pull off back-to-back triumphs.

Gukesh, on the other hand, is hopeful of becoming only the second Indian after the legendary Viswanathan Anand to be crowned chess world champion. Anand, India’s first chess grandmaster, had won the chess world championship on five different occasions, the first of which was in 2000.
