‘Hello, Tamaraw, Again’: Toyota sets grand launch of beloved Philippine brand

MANILA, Philippines – Toyota Motors Philippines (TMP) is launching the next generation Tamaraw on December 6, Friday, in eight malls nationwide.

In a press release on Tuesday, November 26, TMP said the “grand launch” will be held simultaneously in the following malls:

  • Glorietta Activity Center, Makati City
  • SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City
  • Trinoma, Quezon City
  • Ayala Malls Solenad, Santa Rosa, Laguna
  • SM City Pampanga, San Fernando, Pampanga
  • SM City Cebu, Cebu City
  • SM Lanang Premier, Davao City
  • Limketkai Center, Cagayan de Oro City

The launch, which starts at 11 am, will also be livestreamed on the Toyota Motor Philippines Facebook page.

“Various conversions of the Tamaraw will be displayed to showcase its flexibility for different business and personal needs. Through the displays, customers can get to know more about the Innovative International Multi-Purpose Vehicle (IMV) and even place a reservation. The display will be available over the weekend in all eight locations, where there will be activities for the public to learn more about this vehicle,” TMP said.

Rappler learned from a TMP dealership that the new Tamaraw’s “introductory price” ranges from P937,000 to P1.075 million, depending on the variant.

The P937,000 will be for the 2.4 Toyota Tamaraw Dropside (manual, diesel), while the P1.075 million is the price of the 2.4 Toyota Tamaraw Dropside Hi (automatic, diesel).

Toyota Financial Services has an option of 10% downpayment (instead of 15%), seven years to pay (instead of the usual five years) via its Kabuhayan on Wheels Financing. The 10% downpayment means P93,700 for the manual and P107,500 for the automatic, based on the introductory price. Toyota Financial Services Philippines can provide for more information on financing options upon request.

MADE IN PH. Three versions of the next generation Philippine-made Toyota Tamaraw — Tamaraw Ambulance, Tamaraw Patrol Van, and Tamaraw Mobile Services Van — are parked in Malacañang on October 25, 2024.

The Tamaraw dropside variants will cost more if converted into a patrol van, ambulance, refrigerated van, school bus, freezer van, telco van, insulated van, and patient transport.

TMP subsidiary Toyota Mobility Solutions Philippines offers conversions into a camping car, food truck, pet grooming, mobile store, mobile service vehicle, and fire truck.

“The public can look forward to various talks on how the Tamaraw can empower communities toward limitless possibilities,” TMP said.

It added that the “Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw is a resilient and versatile vehicle that aims to provide Filipinos with a partner in progress for the ever-evolving market.”

Toyota Santa Rosa also teased the launch with the line, “Hello, Tamaraw, Again…. Excited ka na rin ba?” following ABS-CBN’s Star Cinema and GMA Pictures’ blockbuster movie Hello, Love, Again of Kapamilya star Kathryn Bernardo and Kapuso heartthrob Alden Richards.

TMP presented the first Philippine-produced next generation Tamaraw to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Malacañang last October 25.

In its latest third quarter earnings report disclosed on November 13, TMP’s parent, GT Capital Holdiings Corporation (GT Capital), led by the family of the late George Ty, said TMP was “on track to achieve new record sales” in 2023.

It said that local production of the new Tamaraw started in its Santa Rosa, Laguna plant in September, and that the Tamaraw is the third Completely Knocked Down (CKD) model to be produced in the Philippines. The first two are the Toyota Vios and Toyota Innova.

“TMP’s consolidated sales increased from P162.8 billion in the first nine months of 2023 to P178.9 billion in the same period of 2024, driven by the 8.4% increase in wholesale volume from 149,719 units in 2023 to 162,326 units in 2024. TMP’s retail sales volume likewise grew by 10.3% from 144,232 to 159,088 units, faster than the industry retail sales volume growth of 7.7% from 320,910 to 345,772 units. As a result, TMP’s market share improved by 1.1% from 44.9% as of the first nine months of 2023 to 46.0% as of the same period in 2024,” GT Capital said.

“Consolidated sales grew as a result of higher retail sales, particularly Vios and Wigo. TMP also benefited from the full impact of new models introduced in 2023, which include Zenix, Yaris Cross, Hilux GR-S, and Alphard, as well as new Lexus models, such as the RX, RZ, and LM.”

Many netizens have posted comments about the new Tamaraw, saying they had expected a wagon design similar to the old Tamaraw

TMP, however, said in an article posted on its website that the old design — which popularized the use of the Tamaraw FX as taxi, family transport, and business hauler — was only allowed at that time.

“The entry-level variants (namely the wagon and high-side pickup) were easily the choice for those looking for a resilient, no-nonsense workhorse vehicle—while the higher-end GL Wagon variants were equipped with features that made the Tamaraw a very comfortable choice for growing families.

“Regulations during the late-’90s and early 2000s allowed the use of sideward-facing, third-row rear seats, which significantly increased passenger capacity. The choice between diesel and gasoline power plants made the Tamaraw FX versatile as well. Needless to say, there was a Tamaraw FX variant to suit every type of requirement and environment,” TMP said. – Rappler.com
