Round 3 of the World Chess Championship 2024 on Wednesday (27 November) at the Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore. The 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster Gukesh
is currently trailing 0.5-1.5 against reigning world champion Liren, 32. Gukesh, playing with the white pieces,
suffered a defeat in the first match of the chess world title series as Chinese GM Liren took a 1-0 lead on Monday (25 November). The second match between the two GMs on Tuesday (26 November)
ended in a draw after 23 moves as they both decided against pursuing a kill, which helped Gukesh to earn his first point in the World Chess Championship.

Gukesh, who is the youngest challenger to the world chess title ever, lacks experience in the big games, and Liren has exposed that in the first two matches as the Chinese have consistently managed to squeeze out of tough positions while Gukesh has been found struggling to either manage time or read the opponent’s tactics. However, the first draw should give Gukesh the needed confidence to return with renewed vigour for Round 3 which is the last before a rest day is afforded to the two players on Thursday (28 November).

The World Chess Championship 2024 is a 14-classical game series and the first player to reach 7.5 points will be declared as the world champion. Liren, who won the world championship in 2023 by beating Russian GM Ian Nepomniachtchi, had entered the competition low on confidence and in poor form but stunned the world chess community with his uncharacteristic display in Round 1. Unlike his original style, Liren started slowly before running through Gukesh’s defence and forcing the Indian youngster to resign.
