India’s 18-year-old Grandmaster D Gukesh is on the brink of history as he takes on reigning world champion Ding Liren, 32, of China in the World Chess Championship. Liren is the first Chinese world champion, while Gukesh is
aiming to become the youngest chess world champion of all time. Also, only one Indian so far has held the world title and there are no prizes for guessing,
it’s Viswanathan Anand.
Gukesh, who hails from Chennai, is already the youngest challenger ever for the world chess title. He won the FIDE Candidates 2024
at the record age of 17 to become the challenger for the World Chess Championship.
FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 Rules and Format
The final is played as a single match consisting of up to 14 classical games. The first player to reach 7.5 points will be crowned the world champion.
Time Control:
120 minutes for the first 40 moves.
60 minutes for the next 20 moves.
15 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move 61.
Players are prohibited from agreeing to a draw before move 41.
Tie-break Rules:
If the final ends in a tie, the match proceeds to tie-breaks.
Rapid Playoff: A four-game series with a 25+10 time control.
Blitz Playoffs:
Two games with a 5+3 time control.
Another two-game series with the same 5+3 time control if needed.
Sudden Death: Individual games with a 3+2 time control will continue until a winner is decided.

D Gukesh vs Ding Liren World Chess Championship Prize Money
The World Chess Championship 2024 has a total prize of $2.5 million (Rs 20.8 crore approximately). Every win will fetch a player $200k (Rs 1.67 crore)and the remaining prize money will be split equally between both Grandmasters. If the Championship goes into a tie-break then the winner will take home $1.3 million (Rs 10.83 crore approx.) while the runner-up will be handed $1.2 million.
