Thailand Woman Sentenced To 235 Years In Jail For Gold Theft

The woman named Somjit Khumduang used to work in a jewellery shop in Khon Kaen area of north-eastern Thailand.

A Thai woman has been sentenced to 235 years in jail for dozens of thefts of gold ornaments from her employer’s shop. The woman stole jewellery from the same shop in which she used to work. When the shop owner checked the CCTV camera, he came to know that the woman had stolen not 1-2 but 47 times. According to the report, the jewellery shop was located in the Khon Kaen area of north-eastern Thailand, in which a woman named Somjit Khumduang used to work. The shop owner began to suspect her of stealing jewellery from the shop. When he checked the CCTV camera of his shop, he found that the woman had started stealing jewellery from 2021. Overall, she has done stealing a total of 47 times.

As per reports, the owner suspected the woman of stealing jewellery 2 months ago, when a gold necklace fell from her clothes. In her defence, the woman said that it must have accidentally fallen into her pocket when she was standing near the shop’s display counter. The shop owner claimed that the woman had stolen goods worth 5 lakh pounds (more than 6 crore rupees).

After further investigation, the police claimed that the woman bought land with the stolen goods, bought many other valuables, and shared a photo of a new bike and jewellery in a Facebook post. The surprising thing is that the woman had been working in that shop for 10 years, due to which the owner had repeatedly told her that if she returned whatever she had stolen, then he would not take any legal action.

The woman had returned only things worth up to Rs 1 crore. After that, the police arrested the woman. The most shocking thing is that the court has sentenced the woman to 235 years of imprisonment.

However, a few days back, in a daring heist caught on camera, two women stole a diamond-studded gold ring from a jewellery shop in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior. The theft came to light when the shop owner reviewed the CCTV footage and shared it on social media. He told the women to return the stolen ring, following which he lodged a complaint with the police.

The Kotwali police have registered a case of theft, and a search for the accused women is underway.
