Singapore has long been regarded as the most expensive city in the world, and it is often linked to high living expenses, luxurious public areas, and excellent public transport. Amidst this, an Indian tourist was shocked to discover that Singapore’s cafe and restaurant costs were at par with Mumbai’s. Even though there is a significant economic gap between Singapore and Mumbai, she called it ‘insane’ that restaurants in Singapore were priced similarly to those in Mumbai. Her post sparked a discussion among netizens on the reasons for the growing inflation in India.

“Was in Singapore for a week and shook by how Mumbai is so expensive when it comes to nice cafes/restaurants and going out, coffee, ubers, experiences etc. Like Singapore was just as/very slightly more expensive as most restaurants in Bandra and that’s absolutely insane,” the social media user wrote on X. Shared on November 15, the post has attracted over 55,000 views.

In another post, she highlighted the exorbitant prices in Mumbai eateries, stating that “drinks in nice restaurants in Mumbai are 800-1200 with taxes, boojee charges 600 for a sandwich and that’s how much their equivalents in SG cost too- the baseline you need to pay for some comfort and luxury in India is so high with restaurants, hotel stays, drinks, cafes, etc.”

Many users attributed the high cost of eating out to classism in India. A user commented saying, “Indian cities are insanely overpriced for everything. I feel like it’s a combo of crazy high rents in India inflating everything and classism – people want to be gated away from most of society.”

On this, the social media user replied, “It’s because of the inequality that even little things like grabbing a coffee from a cafe are a “luxury” that costs 450 rupees while most of us don’t make as much as our developed country counterparts to make these expenses make sense.”

Another user said, “Real estate prices in Mumbai are very high. The fixed costs are very high for restaurant owners if they don’t own the land. They have other expenses too. No other choice.”

Singapore, which competes with cities like New York and London over the cost of living, has continuously topped international surveys. Its reputation as a city where luxury comes with a price tag is cemented by its soaring real estate prices, exorbitant car ownership costs, and upscale eating alternatives. Mumbai, meanwhile, is also not particularly known for being affordable either.
