Despite Carlos Yulo and Mother’s Unresolved Feud Driving a Wedge Between Brothers, Younger Brother Hopes to Follow in Olympian’s Footsteps

Carlos Yulo made history as the first Filipino gymnast to win gold at the Olympics. However, what should’ve been a milestone to remember for the Yulo family, became the starting point of a feud. And while the feud was between the two-time Olympic gold medalist and his mother, Yulo’s relationship with everyone in the family suffered as a result.

Amidst the nationwide celebration of the gymnast’s historic win, Yulo accused his mother of taking out funds from his account without his knowledge. The drama that ensued remains unresolved even today. However, despite the distance between the Olympian and his younger brother, the 16-year-old also aims to attain Olympic glory.

In fact, it’s a journey Karl Eldrew Yulo has already embarked on, showing great promise at just 16. Carlos Yulo’s younger brother has already bagged gold in the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championship and the AGU Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Junior Asian Championships. He showed great promise in the floor exercise and vault events at these contests.

However, the teenager’s breakout performance came at the JRC Artistic Gymnastics in Bangkok, Thailand. “Eldrew won four gold medals and two silver medals,” said Julius Babao, and has even bigger dreams. “Eldrew is determined to follow in his brother Carlo’s footsteps in the 2028 LA Olympics.” said the host in his exclusive interview with Karl Eldrew Yulo on the Julius Babao UNPLUGGED YouTube channel.

However, despite his brother’s success, Carlos Yulo has maintained his distance. Yulo’s accusations against his mother came just days after his Paris Olympics success. “When I finally got control of that bank account, I found out she had been draining it. I have the bank statements showing the withdrawals she made.” the 24-year-old said in a TikTok video.

On August 7, the gymnastics icon’s mother held a press conference. “I ask for your forgiveness as a concerned mother. You are mature enough to make your own decisions. Our door is always open, regardless of your financial status.” said Angelica Yulo. However, despite the emotional toll of their daily feud, Yulo’s younger brother has earned the affection of the Olympian’s mentors.

How Carlos Yulo’s mentors are helping Karl Eldrew achieve his gymnastics dream

Yulo’s grandfather introduced the two-time world champion to the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex at just 12 years old. Despite having no prior gymnastics training, Yulo immediately caught the attention of Cynthia Carrion-Norton, President of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines. From that moment, Carrion-Norton became both a mentor and a second mother to the young gymnast, going to extraordinary lengths to support his journey to success.

Tiring to secure funds for Carlos Yulo to study and train in Japan became so challenging that Carrion gave herself the professional beggar” moniker. Today, after seeing her protégé make history for Philippines gymnastics, Carrion has turned her attention to his younger brother. While the CAP president hasn’t sent his bother to live in Japan, she has introduced the talented gymnast to another of the Olympian’s mentors.

Carrion recently arranged for Yulos’s brother and sister, Eliza Yulo, to train under the Olypian’s former coach in Japan. “Coach Mune (Kugimiya) is right there helping them. They will only be there for 10 days,” the GAP President told the Daily Tribune. Despite having limited time, the two talented siblings learned valuable lessons from their elder brother’s former coach.

This will doubly inspire Karl Eldrew and Eliza to excel in performing well in the years to come as they eye to compete in the Los Angeles Summer Games in 2028,” coach Kugimiya said about training the Yulo’s siblings. Besides Carrion, coach Munehiro Kugimiya played a massive role in helping Carlos Yulo make history for his nation. So it’s safe to say that Karl Eldrew Yulo’s LA2028 dreams are in capable hands.
