An event where punters pay €300 to eat sushi off a naked woman’s body is taking place in the capital today.

The Japanese culture of nyotaimori is being staged in the country in Dublin city’s Odeon bar.

The Dublin organisers Body Finger Food say people pick sushi off the model’s body using chopsticks.

A spokesperson stated on their website: “Nyotaimori is a discipline that combines creativity, respect, and tradition; it’s more than just eating.”

The organisers also stated that punters are not allowed to talk to the model or touch her skin.

They say that this is to uphold cleanliness and to respect her personal space and boundaries of a professional who is playing a part.

Critics have claimed the practice is objectification of women by turning a naked woman into a plate to eat off.

Others have argued it is humiliating and cruel and claim the nyotaimori practice is wrongfully marketed in countries like Ireland as a form of Japanese food culture.

They say it is now considered outdated in Japan and stigmatised so it is performed in clubs.

But fans say nyotaimori is dignified and that the model is a paid artist.

A half-naked female nyotaimori model in China in 2017 attacked a customer who was picking food off her body and then allegedly groped her while she was hired as a human sushi table.

The Dublin organisers say cameras are not allowed – but footage of the 2017 incident in China was filmed and went viral as guests used chopsticks to pick fish rolls off the model, who wore flesh-coloured underwear on a table in a restaurant.

The Dublin organisers said: “Do not take pictures or recordings without the model’s or event organiser’s express consent.

“In these environments, discretion and decency are critical.” They added: “It is important to acknowledge the model’s function as an artist and an integral component of the process.

“They are much more than just objects. They are artists showcasing sushi technique in a vulnerable and distinctive way.”

The Dublin organisers state that nyotaimori, which comes from the Japanese word nyota for woman and taimori for plate, originated between 1603 and 1868 of the Samurai period.

In Japanese culture, victories in battle were often celebrated through various ceremonies and festivities, but there aren’t many documented examples of nyotaimori directly associated with samurai or their victories.

But it is not “historically documented” and the link could be from “mythology or from romanticised interpretations of Japanese traditions”, meaning there is a “degree of fantasy and legend” according to Body Finger Food on their website.

A plastic wrap or a banana leaf is often placed between the sushi and the female model to prevent potential health concerns, similarly also in the male version called nantaimori.

The organisers add: “Nyotaimori, often known as body sushi or naked sushi is a distinctive and thought-provoking Japanese custom.”
