Argentina’s Social Tango Project coming to the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre

Social Tango is bringing dance, music and film to Vernon in a single show.

The 2024-25 Spotlight Dance Series presentation, brought to Vernon by Argentina’s Social Tango Project, takes place Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society.

According to the VDPAC, Social Tango explores the social value of dance, celebrating tango community through the skillfully coordinated mediums of dance, music and film.

Tango lovers — and all lovers of dance – are invited to the evening set to the rhythm of this popular dance in the intimacy of a milonga, recreated by multi-disciplinary choreographer Agustina Videla. Dance, music, projections and documentary film combine to create an authentic, immersive experience.

“Social Tango blends dance, live music and film to create an authentic, immersive experience. This love story will sweep you away for an evening in the heart of Buenos Aires…in Vernon” VDPAC’s Erin Kennedy said, adding dance enthusiasts who enjoyed the popular Spotlight Season performance of Cuba Vibra in March 2019 will also thoroughly enjoy Social Tango.

From Buenos Aires, dance company Social Tango Project is touring US and Canada, playing in Calgary, Vancouver, Greater Toronto and Montreal.

The performance features an original score, a music quartet, a live singer and 10 dancers to fill VDPAC’s main stage.

Guided by her own musical tastes, Videla pieces the scenes together to create a multi-disciplinary show with close ties to local communities.

Social Tango recreates a space capable of bringing together people of different generations, origins and cultures. Videla combines photography, dance and cinematic documentary to create a unique live performance experience.

“This work is a way to celebrate tango as a dance accessible to all of us, and the milonga as a place that creates community,” Videla said.

Tickets are $55 for Adults, $52 for Seniors, $50 for Students and $30 for the first two rows (all ages) and can be purchased online or by calling 250-549-SHOW (7469). The performance is one hour 10 minutes with no intermission.
