An “Alien vs. Predator” theme park land was almost constructed in Malaysia, but Disney forced the project to be canceled.

Background

The “Alien vs. Predator” land was supposed to be part of 20th Century Fox World. The theme park was announced in 2015 but after a legal battle with Disney (which officially acquired Fox in 2019), the park’s name was changed and the “Alien” land was rethemed. In 2022, the park, now known as Genting SkyWorlds, finally opened in Pahang, Malaysia.

The “Alien vs. Predator” land would have included multiple rides and a Nostromo-themed restaurant. Previously, “Alien” was represented in The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. The franchise has also been featured at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. However, the Genting SkyWorlds project would have given the movies the most theme park attention they’ve ever received.

AVP Galaxy has uncovered details and concept art of the canceled “Alien vs. Predator” land, including its E-ticket dark ride/coaster attraction.

AvP: Descent Into Darkness

AvP: Descent Into Darkness was to be manufactured by Dynamic Attractions. It was an “SFX” coaster made of practical set elements and screens, similar to Revenge of the Mummy or Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts at Universal Orlando Resort.

Pathways and lines are marked with precision as if navigating an alien landscape.

As seen in the ride layout, AvP: Descent Into Darkness would have included three new coaster elements: the Tumble Table, the Tilt ‘n’ Drop, and the Side Slide. It also would have included a vertical drop and an outside section.

In addition to concept art and 3D renderings, AVP Galaxy also shared photos of partially completed elements of the attraction, showing how far along it was until Disney shut the land down. Alien animatronics, ride vehicles, and scenery were all under construction.

According to AVP Galaxy’s sources who worked on the ride, guests would have entered an off-world Weyland-Yutani mining and terraforming installation — actually a front for the company’s search for Aliens. During mining operations, the company discovered a Predator pyramid, the main setting of “AvP: Descent Into Darkness.”

In the first queue, guests would be welcomed into the mining facility. This industrial space had metal panels on the walls and ceiling, a well-worn concrete floor, and columns puncturing the ceiling. The second part of the queue was a lab with specimen tables featuring dissected facehuggers and facehuggers in jars. Two monitors would show CCTV footage of a communications scientist conducting a check-in for miners and technicians, as well as maps, mining activity, X-rays, and more.

Guests would then board a Weyland-Yutani vehicle for an expedition inside the pyramid. The ride vehicles went through a few different designs, as seen in concept art and photos. They were designed to be small mining tractors and originally were to have drills on the front, but this element was eventually scrapped.

The pyramid looked much like the one in the first “Alien vs. Predator” film. At the start of the ride, guests would pass other crashed vehicles before entering a chamber where the pyramid walls appear to shift. This effect was achieved using a dome screen. The track would rotate into position using the “Tumble Table” effect. Guests would see Xenomorphs through the moving walls before the coaster launched.

Shooting through the darkness, guests would just catch glimpses of pyramid columns. The ride would then slow in front of another dome screen. The track would tilt forward thanks to the “Tilt ‘n’ Drop” element, so guests could see down into a sacrificial chamber. Facehuggers would begin emerging from eggs and jumping at the riders. The track would tilt backward, pointing guests at a hole in the ceiling. An animatronic Xenomorph would emerge to attack. The vehicle would then drop backward onto a new track section.

The vehicle would take several intense reverse twists and turns before entering another chamber. Guests would feel hot breath on them as the track moved vehicles horizontally, bringing guests face to face with the animatronic Alien Queen.

Just in time, plasma fire would shoot at the queen, saving guests. The vehicle would escape this time with the “Side Slide.” The car along with a section of track would slide down a small horizontal hill. At the end of the hill, still moving horizontally, guests would see the Predator that saved them, appearing via screen.

The track segment would stop, connecting to another launch hallway. Guests would face more Xenomorph animatronics emerging from all sides and above. The vehicle would launch forward, zipping outside. Here, guests would take several banked turns and an inversion before re-entering the building.

As the ride vehicle slowed again, guests would see the Predator standing on a lintel. Dozens of Xenomorphs would be represented by gobo shadows and a screen. Overwhelmed, the predator would set off a self-destruct device on his wrist. With the explosion, the vehicle would drop 6 meters into the final scene. Guests would hear fellow humans calling for them and see flashlight beams as they moved through the rubble to the unloading area.

One of AVP Galaxy’s sources said the following:

It was a truly innovative coaster that fit the storyline of the IP perfectly. It would have been an extraordinary experience that would have thrilled roller coaster enthusiasts and AVP fans alike.

People walk around a well-lit store displaying various merchandise and a large, statuesque figure under a spotlight in the center, giving the place an almost otherworldly feel as if they had landed in an alien marketplace.People walk around a well-lit store displaying various merchandise and a large, statuesque figure under a spotlight in the center, giving the place an almost otherworldly feel as if they had landed in an alien marketplace.

Guests would exit into a gift shop made to look like a mining tunnel and temple chamber. A statue of a Predator and Xenomorph fighting would be in the center.

The AVP land ultimately became Andromeda Base, a generic space-themed land. The SFX coaster is still under construction with the name, “Descent into Darkness.” Dynamic Attractions has faced significant issues in the past few years. Their first SFX coaster, Mission Ferrari in Dubai, opened in 2023. However, the company was forced to declare bankruptcy.

Alien Terrorforma

The land’s second major attraction was an elevator drop ride. This one was actually completed, but the “Aliens” theming had to be removed, and it opened as the Terraform Tower Challenge. Watch a video of the final version below.

In the “Aliens” version of the ride’s narrative, guests were Weyland-Yutani VIPs touring the terraforming tower. Guests walked up a spiral ramp past flickering lights, pumps, compression sounds, and the voices of miners working.

Monitors with the WY logo played informational videos. WY representative Zara, wearing an outfit similar to Vickers in “Prometheus,” welcomed guests. She gave details of the tour and the company, explaining guests were about to learn about the process of terraforming planets with the Atmosphere Exchange System (AES). Guests would ride to the top of the terraforming tower, which was above a drill.

Guests arrived at a holding area and received a safety briefing. They would then move into the central chamber, stow their personal belongings, and board.

After the doors closed, screens would show a WY technician preparing guests for the launch. But something would suddenly go wrong, with the screens flickering and alarms going off. A platform below the elevator would open, causing the vehicle to slowly descend into a chamber full of Xenomorph eggs and warriors. Over the P.A., guests would hear WY employees telling them to remain calm.

[V.O.] Engineer Devon (PA System): You are under full red alert… do not move… stay in your seats… no matter what happens… we’re working to get you out…

The elevator then shot up to the top of the tower. It rebounded a few times before ascending for another drop. It would stop for a moment, then send guests careening down, with a few more bounds before landing.

Zara would conclude the ride with the following statement:

We hope you’ve enjoyed your visit to Weyland-Yutani and remember… together we can discover many vast wonders, bringing high profitability to the admiration of Earth.

The final version of the attraction maintained much of this experience, but without any “Aliens” references. The Xenomorph eggs, figures, and other props were completed but had to be removed.

The land’s story also included the United States Marines, with two rides in their outpost. One was a spinning flat ride called Colonial Fighter Pilots, with four riders in each pod spinning in circles on a platform. Another attraction was the Marine Boot Camp Challenge, which included a ropes course and zipline.

These ended up opening as Alpha Fighter Pilots and Boot Camp Training.
