The viral video shows the zookeeper trying to shut a metal door, which left the panda agitated and in attack mode.

Normally known for their quiet and cuddly nature, pandas can become aggressive when they feel threatened. Though they generally avoid confrontation, they may attack to protect themselves or their cubs if provoked. A recent incident at a zoo in China highlighted this, where a giant panda unexpectedly attacked its zookeeper, tossing and tumbling her around the enclosure. After a few tense minutes, the woman managed to push the panda away and escape unharmed.

The incident occurred at Chongqing Zoo, where a nine-year-old panda named Ding Ding became furious and charged at his zookeeper, leaving onlookers stunned.

As seen in the now-viral videos, the situation escalated when the female zookeeper forcefully closed a metal door inside the enclosure after noticing the panda attempting to enter a restricted passageway. Despite her efforts, the door reopened and the panda persistently tried to enter again. The zookeeper was forced to close it once more, which eventually left the panda frustrated, leading to the unexpected attack.

The panda immediately began chasing her around and tossed her to the ground. Despite the worker’s efforts to fend off the fluffy menace, Ding Ding climbed on top of her and even attempted to bite her. After struggling beneath the panda for some time, the zookeeper managed to push it away with a few kicks. Ding Ding eventually appeared to give up and walked away, allowing the woman to escape unharmed.

The video has been circulated widely across social media platforms, grabbing a lot of reactions from internet users. Speaking on the situation, a Chongqing Zoo spokesperson told TMZ that the matter is being investigated. While both the panda as well as the zookeeper are being given care and attention, they are also keeping a close eye on Ding Ding to ensure she’s not stressed.

A similar incident was reported in April 2024 at another China zoo, where the zookeeper was attacked by two pandas in their enclosure. In the footage going viral, the pandas initially bounced toward the zookeeper, who appears to have snacks, only to start attacking her. At a point, the animal handler was pinned under the animals as she twisted, turned and rolled from side to side in an attempt to free herself.

After a good fight, the zookeeper walked out of the enclosure with a few minor injuries.
