A joint general secretary of the ruling party, Hanif says 95 percent of the divorces in the country are taking place following disputes over doubts from Facebook chatting.

The MP made the claims without citing any study in his address to a gathering of guardians over drugs and safe roads at a community centre in Dhaka organised by the 14-Party ruling coalition.

Hanif advised the guardians to think about the negative impacts of smartphones before giving these to their children.

“Boys and girls are leaning towards Facebook instead of giving attention to their study. Besides this, spouses doubt each other for Facebook chat” he said.

“More and more people are having fights. Families are busy with Facebook instead of having conversations among themselves,” Hanif said.

Speaking about the negative impact of the social media on couples, he said, “As many as 95 percent of 30,000 divorces annually are being caused by nothing but this Facebook.”
