EMC, JD.com Form Big Data Cloud Computing Strategic Cooperation In China

American cloud computing solutions provide EMC reached a strategic cooperation partnership with JD.com, the Chinese e-commerce website formerly known as 360buy.com.

EMC recently held its EMC Forum 2013 in Beijing to introduce its new company Pivotal, focusing on cloud computing and big data, in China for the first time, and it was at this event that the JD.com agreement was announced. Pivotal is a joint venture of EMC and VMware, a virtualization solutions provider, and it gained a strategic investment from GE.

During the forum, EMC and JD.com signed a strategic memorandum of understanding, under which the two parties will cooperate in open-source cloud platform, cloud business intelligence, and big data analysis. The two parties will try to use Pivotal’s analysis technologies on JD.com’s cloud platform to develop and test cloud business intelligence solutions targeting Chinese end-users. Meanwhile, the two parties agreed to jointly develop an open-source project named Cloud Foundry. In addition, EMC will place some cloud application products on JD.com to offer end-users a Software-as-a-Service product.

In May 2012, JD.com published an e-commerce cloud plan, hoping to encourage more software developers to develop e-commerce service applications based on its e-commerce cloud platform. So far, the company has published four cloud solutions, providing an open interface, service trading market, e-commerce application cloud hosting platform, application development cloud platform, and community environment to JD.com’s vendors, logistics partners, e-commerce service providers, and individual developers.

EMC predicted that in 2013, Pivotal’s sales will reach USD300 million and the number will be USD1 billion by 2017. According to a five-year development plan published by EMC China in March 2013, the company aims to increase the operating revenue of its big data related businesses by ten times.
