Jack Ma, chairman of the board of directors of Alibaba Group, sent an internal company mail, stating that starting from May 10, 2013, he will no longer serve as chief executive officer of Alibaba Group and will fully focus on the work as chairman of the group.
At the same time, the group will announce the name of the chief executive officer on May 10, 2013.
Ma said in the internal mail that the Internet is a world for young people. In 2013, most of Alibaba’s executives who were born in the 1960s will stop serving as management execution roles and they will pass the leadership to those born in the 1970s and 1980s, who understand better the future. Ma said it is the responsibility of the current executive team to provide more opportunities to those future leaders.
Ma revealed that over the next few years, he will mainly be responsible for the strategic decisions of the board of directors of Alibaba. In addition, he will assist the new chief executive officer in the organizing of culture and talent training. He will also be committed to the enhancement and improvement of utility.
Prior to this, Alibaba Group announced its largest organizational changes since its founding in 1999. Under the new structure, the group has 25 business units. It also made adjustments to former business decision and execution system. The new system is formed by a strategic decision committee led by the board of directors and a strategic management executive committee led by chief executive officer of the group.
